10:00 Keynote

Following the government’s announcement that the teaching of a foreign language is to be compulsory at KS2 from September 2014, teachers need to prepare and plan for the new curriculum. This keynote will provide an overview of how primary modern languages should be delivered and the main changes since the last primary initiative.

10:30 Workshop 1 Phonics
in Modern Languages

Speaking a foreign language is the skill that children and adults often report finding the hardest to master. Using the synthetic phonics approach, children can quickly learn how to pronounce a foreign language accurately. This workshop will help teachers who lack confidence to pronounce French and Spanish correctly as well as proven techniques to use in the classroom when teaching children how to speak in the language.

11:30 Break

12:00 Workshop 2 Songs,
stories and poetry

Songs, stories and poetry are integral to helping foreign language learning come to life. Find out which are the best resources to use to motivate children and to help them to learn key language, phrases and grammar as well as to find out about the culture of countries which speak the language.

13:00 Lunch

14:00 Cooperative learning and Talk4Writing

Students can enhance their linguistic skills and confidence through cooperative learning strategies. The session will demonstrate how the popular Talk4Writing methodology can be applied to learning a foreign language through the meaningful use of oral activities before writing. It will also show how actions and visual support can enhance children's ability to internalise language patterns.
